Smells Like Something Good

I’ve rapidly become aware of in the last several months the power of a person’s sense of smell. While I’ve obviously been able to use my nose for my entire life, only now do I appreciate the value of inhaling a nice scent.
Yes, I know this is one of the most random post topics on this blog, but I guess I just feel like writing about something this evening.
Two examples of this new-found appreciation. First, the odor I smell whenever I’m inside a building at the summer camp I’ll be working at (and leaving in 8 days, by the way). I’d forgotten how much I loved that smell over the winter, and when I went back for a work day and job interview a month and a half ago, I was hit by it and I felt great. Second, the scent I notice on my best friend, Joni, is probably the weirdest and coolest thing I’ve ever smelled. Yeah, that sounds pretty creepy and twisted, but I don’t think she’ll mind as I write this. I’ll miss that (and her, too) over the summer when we go away to our different jobs.
So what’s in a smell? I think the way we feel about a certain odor is partly the scent itself and partly psychological. Whenever I have a LOST or RockStar energy drink, the smell of it alone almost makes me feel more awake; I’m told a lot of coffee addicts get the same thing from their daily cup of java. Personally I can’t stand the taste of coffee in any way, shape, or form, but I guess I can relate. To each his own, right?
