IE8, the Scapegoat or the Champion?

I don’t think it is my place to post a long commentary on this subject, so I will instead direct you to a series of heated discussions going on around the top web design blogs. Microsoft’s choice to implement a new standards-mode toggling system into the next version of Internet Explorer (version 8, or IE8 for short), and the latest issue of A List Apart that talks about it, has created a good deal of stir in the world of web designers, and many prominent designers are speaking out against it.
I cannot begin to summarize what’s being said, so I will refer you to an excellent roundup written by Jonathan Christopher. From his list, it’s evident that web designers aren’t afraid of putting their two-cents worth in.
My question, which I mentioned in this posts’ title, is this: are we treating IE8 as the proverbial scapegoat, or the champion? The answer isn’t clear, but I suspect IE8 is becoming the funnel we dump all of our problems into, and we expect a wave of solutions and beautiful things to emerge. Obviously it doesn’t work that way, and I feel it may be time to stop leaning on something, whether it be the W3C or IE8, and stand up straight.
A little independence may go a long way.
